Fallen but Not Forgotten

There is something quietly hopeful about finding beauty and purpose in what we so often overlook...

Fallen but Not Forgotten

25th August 22

It’s often the smallest things that stir my imagination, the soft crunch of leaves underfoot, a gust of wind carrying the scent of damp earth, the scattered golden lace of autumn beneath my boots.  I’ve always felt that nature gives so freely, so abundantly, and all she ever asks is that we pay attention.

So, when I stumbled across a company turning fallen street leaves into paper, my heart quite honestly skipped a beat.

Releaf Paper, a brilliant initiative born in Ukraine, has done something quietly revolutionary: they’ve taken the ordinary, the leaf litter most of us sweep away without thought, and given it purpose.  Their team collects urban leaves and transforms them into sustainable packaging, paper bags and stationery.  No trees felled, no bleach, no water wasted.  Just what was already there, waiting to be repurposed.

What I find most beautiful about this isn’t just the cleverness of it, though it is tremendously clever, it’s the spirit behind it.  A kind of gentle innovation that asks us to look again, to reimagine what we call waste, and to find grace in the overlooked.

It’s really easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of environmental crises.  But companies like Releaf remind me that sustainability doesn't always require grand gestures.  It can be in the quiet act of collecting fallen leaves and giving them a second life…

I’d love to see their products in our shops, in our hands, in our daily lives. Because the more we surround ourselves with thoughtful alternatives, the more we begin to shift, not just with what we choose to buy, but in how we see the world; in what we see within the realm of the possible.
